Imports in Uzbekistan
The results for the period January-June 2008 show a 9.8% growth in imports compared to the corresponding period of 2007. The commodity composition of imports reflects a rise in the share of processing equipment needed to accomplish the sectoral programs of development, modernization and technical upgrade of industrial producers that were approved during 2007-2008. In particular, equipment, labor-saving devices, components for production needs of enterprises-producers make up 48.8% of total imports.
The largest growth in imports was registered in the following sectors: commercial timber and non-ferrous metal products (more than 30-fold), special-purpose vehicles (3-fold), machinery and equipment, buses (2-fold), etc. A breakdown by country indicates that traditional partners prevail. The share of imports from Russia accounted for 25.7% (93.9% compared to 2007), Kazakhstan - 12.1% (107.5%), South Korea - 9.8% (112.3%), Ukraine 7.7% (123.9%).
Exports and imports by enterprises with foreign investments (EFI). The results for the first half of 2008 show that the number of operating EFIs engaged in foreign trade rose by 554 units. The following countries accounted for most of this rise: United Kingdom (68 enterprises), Kazakhstan (45 enterprises), Russia (190 enterprises).
The results for the first half of 2008 show that EFI foreign trade turnover grew by 19.6% compared to the corresponding period of 2007. Exports by EFIs totaled US$1,310.8 million and rose by 56.9% compared to the corresponding period of 2007 (Table 3.3). The EFIs in the following sectors feature prominently in export supplies: fuel industry (2-fold rise to 2007), transport (122.3%), construction (2.3-fold), trade (2.7-fold) and other sectors of the economy. Machinery and equipment accounted for 74.2%.of total EFI exports to CIS countries.
A territorial breakdown shows that the major export supplies of the EFIs were from Andijan region (31.1%), Kashkadarya region (27.8%), and Tashkent city (21.5%).
In January-June 2008, EFI imports of goods and services totaled US$1,463.0 million (98.6% of the 2007 figure). The decline in imports resulted from a reduction in imports of: chemical output (98.1%), non-ferrous and ferrous metals (70.1%), textile, construction and other goods (82.2%), and services (35.7%). With increasing output being produced locally the imports by EFIs are declining: flour mill produce (29.4%), housing and utilities infrastructure (87.6%).
