Uzbekistan Chemical industry
One of the leading places in the national economy of the republic belongs to chemical industry. As the raw materials for that branch serve: gas, oil, coal, ozokerit, sodium salt and various waste of non-ferrous metallurgy, processing of raw cotton and ambary. The role of chemical industry is especially important for the development of cotton growing and supplying that branch with mineral fertilizers. The branch, except mineral fertilizers, produces pesticides for fighting against cotton pests, elaborates various kinds of synthetic fibers, different colorants, and its sub-branch, household chemistry, and manufactures various goods for satisfaction of the population demands.
The big enterprises for chemical industry are Chirchik Electric-Chemical Works, Samarkand Superphosphate Factory, Ferghana Nitrogen Fertilizers Factory, «Navoiazot», Almalyk and Namanghan. Chemical Factories and such enterprises as: Tashkent Synthetic. Detergents, Andijan and Ferghana Hydrolysis, Tashkent Plastic Material, Tashkent Chemical-Pharmaceutical.
In 2008 the growth in the production of chemical output accounted for 8.4%. This was achieved mainly by an increase in the physical volumes of nitrogenous fertilizers (by 4.6%) and phosphate fertilizers (by 3.8%). Production of the new product, caustic (soda) ash, grew by 66.1%. The modernization and technical upgrade of the ammonia producing businesses fell behind the schedule. This was the main factor which impeded the further growth of the production of mineral fertilizers that account for more than 80% of total output.
